Haridwar to Get New Ghats Road Upgrades and Riverfront Makeover Ahead of Kumbh 2027
Haridwar begins massive infrastructure upgrade for Kumbh 2027 — new ghats, road projects, sanitation and safety plans to welcome millions of pilgrims.
Haridwar to Add New Ghats, Repair Existing Ones Ahead of Kumbh 2027
Haridwar (Uttarakhand), September 2025 — In a major push to upgrade its riverfront infrastructure, Haridwar is set to receive new bathing ghats, while existing ones will undergo extensive repair work ahead of the Kumbh 2027 pilgrimage, officials confirmed. The move aims to ease crowding, improve safety, and ensure smooth logistics during the massive spiritual gathering.
Permanent Works to Be Completed by October 2026
In a review meeting, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed all relevant departments to expedite the construction and renovation process. All permanent works—including new ghats, road expansions, parking zones, and campsites—must be wrapped up by October 2026, he said. Any delay could jeopardize preparations for the upcoming Kumbh.
He emphasized inter-departmental coordination, saying, “Tasks must be prioritized and executed seamlessly.”
Encroachment Removal & Land Acquisition
To prepare the expanded mela area, the government is rigorously targeting encroachments on government land and roads. Dhami instructed officials to enforce strict action against illegal structures, ensuring unhindered access to ghats, pathways, and camping zones.
He also instructed that the ongoing Haridwar Ganga Corridor project align closely with Kumbh preparations.
Key Projects & Road Infrastructure
One of the high-priority initiatives is the Bahadarabad–Shyampur bypass currently under construction, which Dhami wants fast-tracked for completion well before Kumbh. The project is expected to play a critical role in diverting traffic and improving connectivity for pilgrims.
Additionally, the Kangra Ghat is slated for expansion, and several ghats across Haridwar will be modernized to match the proposed master plan. Each zone—roads, parking, tents, camps—will be clearly laid out in the mela blueprint.
Pilgrim Facilities, Sanitation & Security
Recognizing the immense scale of the event, the CM demanded robust arrangements for traffic, parking, shuttle services, waste management and crowd control. He called for a zero-waste model: installation of adequate dustbins, recycling units, mobile toilets, and 24/7 cleaning along the ghats and riverbanks.
Special focus was placed on female devotees’ facilities—separate toilets, changing rooms, and proper seating for Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
Security, medical services, and information centers must be fully operational and integrated with route diversions and crowd control protocols. Dhami also mandated that the Chief Secretary review the Kumbh preparations every 15 days to ensure nothing falls behind schedule.
