Simhastha 2028 preparations: Ujjain Railway Station Gets a High-Tech Upgrade

As Simhastha 2028 preparations continue across Ujjain, Indian Railways has announced an important crowd management initiative that will transform how pilgrims travel through Ujjain Railway Station. The new plan introduces a one-way passenger movement system, AI-powered surveillance, drone monitoring, additional security personnel, and improved passenger facilities to handle the growing number of devotees visiting Mahakaleshwar Temple.

The initiative is being implemented during the Sawan pilgrimage season and is expected to serve as a trial model for the much larger crowds anticipated during Simhastha 2028, one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

One-Way Passenger Movement

The biggest change is the introduction of a one-way passenger system inside the railway station. According to the plan, passengers will enter the station only through Platform No. 1, while all exits will be routed through Platform No. 8.

This organized flow will reduce congestion, prevent people from moving in opposite directions, and improve overall passenger safety. Similar systems have been successfully implemented at major pilgrimage centres and airports to manage heavy footfall.

Special Trains for Devotees

Railway officials have also proposed three special trains between Ujjain and Bhopal during the Sawan month. These services are intended to accommodate the increased number of pilgrims visiting Mahakaleshwar Temple and reduce pressure on regular train operations.

If approved, these additional trains will make travel more convenient for devotees arriving from different parts of Madhya Pradesh and nearby states.

Temporary Holding Area for Passengers

To improve crowd management, Railways will establish a temporary waterproof holding area covering approximately 1,200 to 1,500 square metres. Instead of allowing unrestricted access to platforms, passengers will wait in this designated area until boarding time.

Authorities also plan to allow entry inside the station only 30 minutes before a train's arrival, helping prevent overcrowding inside station premises.

AI Surveillance and Drone Monitoring

Technology will play a major role in ensuring passenger safety. Ujjain Railway Station currently operates 102 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, and around 200 additional cameras are planned, taking the total to nearly 302 surveillance cameras.

The AI system will monitor passenger density, identify congestion points, and alert officials whenever crowd levels exceed safe limits. Drone surveillance will provide real-time aerial monitoring of station entrances, queues, and surrounding areas, enabling faster response during emergencies.

Enhanced Security Arrangements

To strengthen security during the pilgrimage season, 50 additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel will be deployed. Government Railway Police (GRP) teams will continue their regular operations, ensuring better coordination for crowd control and emergency response.

Millions of devotees are expected to visit Ujjain during Simhastha 2028, making efficient transportation one of the biggest logistical challenges. The one-way passenger system, AI surveillance, controlled entry, special trains, and improved security demonstrate that preparations are moving beyond roads and temple infrastructure to include modern railway management.

These initiatives will help reduce congestion, improve passenger safety, and provide a smoother travel experience for pilgrims.
