Why a Doon Boy or Girl Would Travel to Ujjain
You live in Dehradun. You have Mindrolling Monastery. You have Tapkeshwar Mahadev. You have the clean Ganga at Rishikesh just an hour away. So why travel over 1,000 kilometers to Ujjain? Because Mahakal is different. The energy of a Jyotirlinga in the middle of a busy city, with loud chants, fresh bhasma, and the Shipra river flowing quietly – it hits you differently. Plus, Ujjain is not just a temple town. It is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism. If you are someone who has done the Char Dham of Uttarakhand, let me tell you – Ujjain completes a different kind of spiritual circuit. And the journey from the hills of Doon to the plateau of Malwa is an education in itself. The food changes. The language changes. Even the way people greet you changes. You will love it.
Dehradun to Ujjain Distance – The Real Numbers
Forget what random websites say. Here is the actual distance based on my GPS logs and ticket bookings:
-
By Train (via Mathura-Kota-Bhopal route): Approximately 1,120 to 1,150 kilometers of track
-
By Road (NH334 to NH44 to NH46): Roughly 1,040 to 1,080 kilometers depending on your starting point in Dehradun
-
By Flight (via Delhi or Mumbai): Aerial distance around 900 km, but total travel time is 6 to 9 hours with layovers
This is not a weekend trip. You need at least three full days to do justice. Anyone telling you otherwise has never actually sat in a train for 22 hours straight.
Best Time to Travel from Dehradun to Ujjain
This is crucial because Dehradun and Ujjain have opposite weather patterns.
Winter (October to March) – Best Time
-
Dehradun is pleasant to cold (10°C to 22°C)
-
Ujjain is mild (15°C to 28°C)
-
Mahakal darshan is comfortable
-
Book trains 60 days in advance for winter months
Summer (April to June) – Only If Absolutely Necessary
-
Dehradun is warm but bearable (25°C to 35°C)
-
Ujjain is a furnace (38°C to 46°C)
-
The marble floors inside Mahakal temple burn your bare feet
-
I did this once in May. Never again.
Monsoon (July to September) – Risky But Beautiful
-
Dehradun gets heavy rain – landslides possible on roads
-
Ujjain looks stunning in wet grey skies
-
Train delays are common (2 to 6 hours)
-
Shipra river fills up. Ram Ghat aarti feels magical.
My honest advice: Go between October 15 and March 15. You will thank me.
Dehradun to Ujjain by Train – The Only Sensible Way for Most People
Let me be clear. Flying is faster but expensive. Driving is exhausting. Train is the sweet spot for distance, comfort, and cost.
Direct Trains? The Honest Answer
There is no direct train from Dehradun to Ujjain. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying. You must change trains at one of these hubs: Mathura, Kota, Bhopal, or Indore.
But do not worry. I have found the smoothest combinations.
Best Route 1 – Dehradun → Mathura → Ujjain
First leg: Dehradun Shatabdi (Train No. 12018)
-
Departure: 3:45 PM from Dehradun
-
Arrival Mathura: 10:00 PM
-
Travel time: 6 hours 15 minutes
-
Class: Chair Car or Executive
Second leg: Malwa Express (Train No. 12920)
-
Departure Mathura: 12:15 AM (midnight)
-
Arrival Ujjain: 5:00 PM next day
-
Travel time: 16 hours 45 minutes
Wait time at Mathura: 2 hours 15 minutes. You can eat at the Mathura Junction food court – try the peda and aloo kachori.
Best Route 2 – Dehradun → Kota → Ujjain (My Personal Favorite)
First leg: DDN KOTA SF Express (Train No. 12402)
-
Departure: 6:10 PM from Dehradun
-
Arrival Kota: 9:00 AM next day
-
Travel time: 14 hours 50 minutes
-
Class: Sleeper or 3AC (night journey)
Second leg: Kota to Ujjain – Multiple trains available
-
Avantika Express (10:30 AM from Kota, reaches Ujjain at 3:30 PM)
-
Panchvalley Express (12:15 PM from Kota, reaches Ujjain at 5:45 PM)
Why this is my favorite: You sleep through the boring part. Wake up in Kota, have breakfast at the station, and reach Ujjain by afternoon – check into hotel, rest, and go for evening aarti.
Route 3 – Via Bhopal (For Adventure Lovers)
First leg: Dehradun to Bhopal via Nizamuddin (change at Delhi)
This takes longer but Bhopal is beautiful. You can spend half a day at Bhojeshwar Temple or Upper Lake before catching a 3-hour train to Ujjain.
Train Booking Tips from Someone Who Has Failed Many Times
-
Do not wait for tatkal on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Tickets go in 30 seconds.
-
Book both legs together using IRCTC's "Book Connecting Journey" option.
-
If you are two or more people, book a cabin in 3AC for the overnight leg. Worth the extra money.
-
Keep a ₹100 coin for the coolie. Mathura and Kota stations have no working ATMs near platform 1.
Dehradun to Ujjain by Road – Long but Memorable
If you love driving and have a co-driver, this road trip is an experience. But do not do it alone.
The Best Route (Tested by Me)
Dehradun → Haridwar → Roorkee → Muzaffarnagar → Meerut → Delhi → Ghaziabad → Mathura → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi → Lalitpur → Guna → Biaora → Shajapur → Ujjain
Total driving time: 19 to 22 hours (with breaks)
Distance: 1,040 km
Road condition: Excellent from Delhi to Gwalior (NH44). Patchy from Guna to Shajapur.
Divide and Conquer – Where to Stop for the Night
Option 1 (aggressive): Drive to Agra (6 hours from Dehradun). Sleep there. Next morning drive 10 hours to Ujjain.
Option 2 (relaxed): Drive to Gwalior (9 hours). Visit Gwalior Fort next morning. Then drive 8 hours to Ujjain.
Fuel and Toll Reality Check
-
Petrol one way: ₹7,500 to ₹9,000 (depending on your car)
-
Toll charges: ₹1,800 to ₹2,200
-
Food and chai stops: ₹500 to ₹800
-
Total one way: ₹10,000 to ₹12,000
Highway Gems You Should Not Miss
-
Near Roorkee – Bikanerwala for fresh samosa and chai
-
Meerut bypass – Giani Da Dhaba (best dal makhani on highway)
-
Mathura – Brijwasi Mithai for hot jalebis
-
Gwalior – Silver Oak restaurant near the fort
Serious Warning
Do not drive the Guna to Shajapur stretch after 7 PM. The road has no lights, sudden cattle crossings, and zero petrol pumps. I made this mistake and spent two hours behind a tractor with no tail lights. Never again.
Dehradun to Ujjain by Flight – Fast, Expensive, No Direct Option
There is no direct flight from Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport to Ujjain. You must fly via Delhi, Mumbai, or Indore.
Best Flight Route

-

-
Duration: 1 hour
-
Cost: ₹2,500 to ₹5,000
Leg 2: Delhi (DEL) to Indore (IDR)
-

Total Cost and Time
-
Flight cost: ₹7,000 to ₹15,000 one way

-
Is it worth it? Only if you have less than 48 hours for the entire trip or you are taking elderly parents who cannot handle a 22-hour train.
Pro Tip
Book the first flight from Dehradun (usually 7 AM) and the morning flight from Delhi to Indore (10 AM). You will reach Ujjain by 1 PM. Check into hotel. Take a nap. Go for Mahakal evening aarti at 7 PM. Perfect day.
Where to Stay in Ujjain – Neighborhood Guide
Your hotel choice matters more in Ujjain than in Dehradun. Here is why – Ujjain streets are narrow and congested. If you book a hotel inside the Mahakal temple zone, your car or taxi cannot reach the door. You will walk the last 500 meters with luggage.
Best Areas to Stay
1. Madhya Marg (Main Road) – My top recommendation
-
Hotels: Hotel Atharva, Hotel Siddhant, Abika Elite
-
Pros: Car accessible, good restaurants, 15-minute walk to temple
-
Cons: Slightly more expensive
2. Station Road – Good for train travelers
-
Hotels: Hotel Imperial, Hotel Ashray
-
Pros: Near railway station, cheap
-
Cons: Far from temple (4 km, need auto)
3. Jaisinghpura (Closest to temple) – Only for pilgrims
-
Hotels: Basic dharamshalas, no-name lodges
-
Pros: 2 minutes to Mahakal
-
Cons: No parking, narrow lanes, noisy all night
Budget Guide (Per Night, Double Room)
-
Dharamshala: ₹400 to ₹800
-
Budget hotel: ₹800 to ₹1,500
-
Mid-range hotel: ₹1,500 to ₹3,000
-
Premium hotel: ₹3,500 to ₹6,000
My Personal Pick
Hotel Atharva on Madhya Marg. Clean. Hot water 24/7. Rooftop restaurant with Shipra river view. Staff helps with Mahakal darshan tickets. Cost around ₹2,200 per night. Worth every rupee.
Mahakal Darshan – Your Complete Guide from a Dehradun Traveler
You came from the land of Shiv ji at Tapkeshwar. But Mahakal is different. Here is how to do it right.
Bhasma Aarti (The Main Event)
-
Time: 4:00 AM (winter) to 5:30 AM (summer) – changes daily
-
Ticket cost: ₹300 to ₹400 (online via MP Tourism)
-
How to book: Go to mahakaltemple.com or mptourism.com 30 days in advance
-
What happens: Priests apply fresh bhasma (ash) on the Jyotirlinga. Chants echo. The energy is unreal.
Without VIP Ticket (Free Darshan)
-
Normal waiting time: 1 to 2 hours
-
Monday waiting time: 4 to 7 hours (avoid)
-
Best time to enter: 12 PM to 3 PM (temple is empty)
-
Worst time: 7 AM to 10 AM (everyone comes after morning aarti)
What You Cannot Carry
-
Mobile phone (lockers available outside – ₹20 to ₹50)
-
Leather belt or wallet
-
Large bag or backpack
-
Shoes (free shoe stand near south gate)
Senior Citizen Fast Track
If you are traveling with parents above 65 years, go to the south gate. Show ID. Get special entry. No ticket needed. A volunteer may ask for a small donation (₹50 to ₹100). Pay it. It goes to temple maintenance.
The Rule Nobody Tells You
Do not eat heavy food before bhasma aarti. You will sit on marble floor for 90 minutes. The crowd presses from all sides. Your stomach will regret that heavy paratha from Dehradun. Eat a banana or two biscuits only.
What Else to See in Ujjain (Beyond Mahakal)
You have traveled over 1,000 kilometers. Do not just see one temple.
1. Harsiddhi Temple
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The deep stambh (lamp tower) is spectacular after 7 PM. Aarti here is quieter than Mahakal but equally powerful.
2. Kaal Bhairav Temple
This is unique. Devotees offer liquor to the deity. Small bottles of whisky or rum are sold right outside. The priest pours it into the deity's mouth. Do not miss this – you will not find anything like it anywhere else.
3. Ram Ghat Shipra Aarti
Happens at 7 PM daily. Less crowded than Ganga aarti in Haridwar. More peaceful. The boat ride during aarti costs ₹50 and gives you the best view.
4. Sandipani Ashram
This is where Lord Krishna, Balram, and Sudama studied. The well here is said to have been dug by Krishna himself. Very old. Very calm. No crowds.
5. Jantar Mantar Ujjain
Built by Maharaja Jai Singh. Smaller than Delhi but historically important. The samrat yantra still works accurately. Entry ₹25.
6. Gomti Kund
A small tank near Mahakal temple. Holy dip here is considered equivalent to bathing in the Ganga during Kumbh. Cleaner than you expect.

Packing List – From Doon Chill to Malwa Warmth
This is something most guides get wrong. You are leaving cold Dehradun for warm Ujjain.
Winter Trip (Oct to Mar)
-
From Dehradun: Wear a light jacket + sweater
-
For Ujjain: Pack cotton clothes, one light shawl for morning aarti
-
Don't carry: Heavy woolens – you will sweat in Ujjain
Summer Trip (Apr to Jun)
-
From Dehradun: Wear cotton
-
For Ujjain: Cotton, cotton, cotton. Sunglasses. Cap. ORS powder.
-
Essential: Wet wipes and a small hand towel – you will need it
Always Carry
-
Exact change (₹10, ₹20, ₹50 coins and notes) for lockers and offerings
-
One long scarf or dupatta for temple visits
-
Basic medicines – Ujjain medical stores close by 9 PM near temples
-
Paper printout of train tickets. Mobile network is patchy inside Mahakal area.
Common Mistakes – Learn from My Pain
-
Booking return train from Ujjain without confirm ticket. You will end up paying ₹1,500 to a travel agent for a ₹400 ticket. Book return ticket before leaving Dehradun.
-
Reaching Ujjain on a Monday. Worst decision ever. The queue for Mahakal touches 1 kilometer on Mondays.
-
Keeping phone in pocket during darshan. The crowd crushes it. I saw three broken screens in one queue. Use the locker.
-
Trusting Google Maps for Guna-Shajapur stretch at night. Road works are not updated. You will end up on unpaved village roads.
-
Eating at Ujjain station before bhasma aarti. That pakora will give you acidity during the 90-minute sitting. Eat after darshan.
How This Journey Feels – A Personal Note from Doon to Mahakal
I have done the Haridwar to Rishikesh drive a hundred times. I have sat in Tapkeshwar at 5 AM when the cave is empty. I thought I knew Shiva. Then I went to Ujjain. Mahakal is not the calm, meditative Shiva of the mountains. Mahakal is the Shiva who runs through a crowded city. The Shiva who accepts bhasma and liquor both. The Shiva who never sleeps. When you come from Dehradun – where the air is clean and the hills are quiet – Ujjain will shock you. But if you stay for three days, walk the narrow lanes, eat at the old chai stalls near Ram Ghat, and attend the bhasma aarti with an open heart – you will understand why people travel a thousand kilometers for this. The distance from Dehradun to Ujjain is not just in kilometers. It is from the mind to the heart. And that journey is always worth taking.
